When the current family member who runs the mill in Donegal found a sportcoat from the 40s using fabric his relative helped weave, he knew he wanted to bring it back to Ireland with him. At last years development meeting, he was showing us the fabric and we loved the depth of color, yarn irregularity, and overall finish of the fabric, so we wanted to redevelop something similar in a coating weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fabric development started by working with these little puffs of raw wool, called \"pads\". With the pads, we're looking at both final yarn colors, as well as the colors of the flecks you find in Donegal Tweeds. If you look back long enough, tweeds, whether Harris, Donegal or otherwise, would often traditionally have these deco stripes or checks added in, often in brighter oranges, yellows, and greens. The warm grey yarns help tone down the initial brightness of the cream yarns. It's woven with the same irregularity and slubbiness, with an emphasis on letting the inconsistencies in the weaving process shine. While it is still very much our same yarns and designs, the finishing is slightly different. This alpaca blend came about from our love of the old Casentino cloth we worked with a few years ago. We loved that it looked and felt like it had been through decades of wear but could still hold up, and this alpaca blend is no different. We worked the alpaca into our usual tweed, and put it through a more rigorous finishing, to give off a more worn, felted look and feel.
